Remi Odunsi


2008 – Present (5 years 8 months)

Remi an educationist in the UK trained as a mathematics teacher in UK and has taught children of various abilities at both primary and secondary school levels.

She has more than twenty years’ experience of teaching children with different types of special educational needs (SEN) especially children on the autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) both in mainstream and special schools.

She has worked with American Consultants and British experts to set up an autistic provision in a large secondary school in Britain to provide effective education for children with ASD including children with Asperger’s syndrome in mainstream school.

The main focus of her present research is the identification of children with mild/high functioning autism in mainstream schools to enable teachers provide the appropriate and effective education for all children with ASD.

  • 2 years teaching Maths and Chemistry up to GCE ‘O’ level, Nigeria
  • 2 years teaching Maths and science up to GCSE level
  • 5 years Head of Maths and ICT coordinator in 3 Special schools for children with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties
  • 1 year teaching children with ASD in a special purpose built school
  • 8 years Special educational needs coordinator in Large secondary schools
  • 4 years as Head of learning support which involved liaising with experts in the medical and social welfare services to meet the needs of all pupils at the schools.
  • Training teachers, providing human and material resources and monitoring the teaching and learning of all children with SEN.
  • Working with charities in Nigeria to raise awareness of ASD in different states
  • Training parents and carers of children with ASD in Nigeria
  • Facilitating teachers workshop on teaching children with SEN/ASD in Nigeria
  • Training researchers in Nigeria to conduct a needs assessment of parents of children with SEN in a local authority

Remi enjoys studying especially conducting educational research.

  • She has studied in five of the best universities in Britain in fields ranging from mineral processing engineering to mining engineering and Master degree in education.
  • She also recently obtained a Master degree in the education of children with autism and is currently completing a research for a Phd. in the same field.
  • She has always used the knowledge gained from all these studies to improve the learning experience of children with SEN
  • Attended intensive 3-week training at Heartspring centre for children with SEN/ASD in Kansas, USA.

Remi has been involved in a lot of voluntary work in Nigeria to enable children with SEN/ASD achieve their potential and support schools and teachers. She has collected data for her research in the UK from Nigeria to focus and reveal the desperate needs of children with SEN/ASD in the country.
